I will help you as much as I can! But I am currently not allowed to buy another UTE!
One good thing is they dropped the 25% import duty on imported Astralian trucks (no matter the age) that I had to pay
when I brought mine over. And there are some guys that specialize in importing American iorn to OZ that will reverse the
shipping direction and send some UTEs this way.

I will have to look that up in my old emails. I am building a new website dedicated to UTEs and hope to be able to foster better communications across the pond between people here in the states that either want UTEs, or have them and need parts? and Blokes in OZ that have UTEs to sell, Parts to sell, Run shipping companies etc I have high hopes to do it this winter since I have been gathering information and images for a long time.

Looks like a few of us have had similar ideas.
There are a lot of US to Australia cargo movement these days, mostly in the fords and chevs in the truck arena.
At the moment in Perth container space from the US east coast to here is quite cheap.
I have talked to a few guys here about shipping to the US and there are a couple of people doing it.
There are a couple of guys on the east coast of oz that do import and export of Chrysler cars and parts. It’s surprising how many cars and parts these guys send to the US.
Definate possibilities.

Staring @ V8 Heads

This is from a string of messages called Poly or Hemi that was active the first week of Nov.
When Crashler Corperation introduced the 331 Cubed V8 in 1951 it had a 2 bbl carb with 7.5:1 compession and produced ten more HP as Caddy's 4 bbl'd 331. This "Hemi" headed engine said I Am Powerful even if I use the cheaper gas. ( Even tho the MPG figures were a little of a sore subject. )
The next year De Soto was permitted to have their V8. And in 1953 Dodge too had a V8. By the time De Soto and Dodge was on the scene, the problems of the first Chysler V8's where being fixed. Part of the "fix" was the poly heads. But as we all know the ole saying of, "...the firstist with the mostist..." applies. ( That's why the B-24 which did all better than a B-17 was never looked as the better by the general public. )
Back to cars & trucks. The general public all knew the Hemi headed engine was very good. The learned general public all knew the poly engine was in the entry level Dodges and Chrysler's. And just who wants to drive a second class powered V8 ( even if it does have the same HP spec's ). Remember this is 1950 sumthin and it was just last year the flat head's were it. It's now overhead valves and Hemi heads, and un-believiable more power. ( Why I heard if you mill the heads so the CR is closer to 10:1 that power is ~...)
If you speak with a person that was a new driver after 1950 they can tell you about the power and speed the Chrysler products had when they went to the V8. And if they blasted over the century mark it may have been in

a MoPar ( on a two lane road ).
If you go to any car event and there is a Hemi powered anything you will notice the crowd standing and looking and and looking. It's ole advertizing history and history speaking to the crowd. I have no vehicle with a poly head. If I did, I would probly bore you with endless data about the poly headed.

I am fishing for the price for selling my truck. It is a 1952 B3B that has been through a long drawn out
restoration. The engine, transmission, differential, steering, electrical, suspension, etc. have all been rebuilt. It has been converted to 12volt, power disc brakes(front), sway bars(front and rear), panhard bar on front axle, gas cleaned and sealed, Offenhauser dual carb, Phillips headers, Pertronix point-less ignition, stainless steel battery box and glovebox, seatbelts, spin-on oil filter, custom built camper shell,etc..
I have an extra body and boxes of extra parts.. I am looking for $5000. I am I asking too much????
This has always been a great and honest forum...your comments are appreciated..

I wouldn't exactly call that a restoration but the price seems to be in range. It's like buying a house. You can't tell by driving by it. We don't have even that option (no pictures).

Items like location and the fact that it has 12 volts, headers and etc can make it hard to sell since these items were done w/o a QA record.

You could list it on Ebay with a high reserve and see what kind of tire kickers you get.
I've seen an original unrestored Pilot-House trucks where the seller would not lower his price from $3,900. I liked it, but I had to pass. If the work is well done $5,000 is a good price. You don't often see these trucks in clean condition.
Whatever you sell it for it what it is worth.

Pilothouse hed tarp hooks

While reading some older forum postings, stumbled across a photo of someones very nice 3/4 ton pilothouse with a row of tarp hooks bolted to the outside of the bed. These hooks each had two bolts retaining them and the hooks themselves had sort of a ball end to keep from poking you when you walked past. I've seen these on Ford and Chevy beds also, so they must have been period accessories. My B1B bed is drilled for four hooks on each side plus two on the end gate. Anyone know where I can find these hooks? They aren't beautiful, but might look better than 20 extra holes. Thanks, Dave Erb

I use the hooks from a M37, Similar and you can get them from Vintage Power Wagons.

GTK - these are not listed in my copy of the VPW catalog. I called and thier counter man has no knowledge of these hooks. Have you any numbers or other suggestions that I might follow up on? Notice also in his pics that Mr. Evans' yellow pickup sports similar hooks, so they must be available somewhere. Thanks, Dave Erb

All my hooks were collected up over the years from different parts trucks that have come my way. I do like their shape more than the generic store
bought ones. Like GTK suggested,let us know what the owner of VPW has to say.
Darn,,,,,should have clear coated the acorn nuts.

Yes, "T146" is an engineering code for 1948-1949 1 ton trucks, so these two engines would have come from those model trucks. The last 4 digits are sequential numbers that started at 0001 in each engineering code. This information is from one of Don Bunn's Dodge truck books. They are full of information like this and are invaluable to own.

Last June I down loaded a pic of a beautiful red lower body and box and upper white color dodge half ton. I just noticed it had a wraparond windshield and V8 insignia just above the grill. Question: what engine did that model truck have and will it fit into a 53 B3B?

In 1954 the trucks could be had with a 241 V8, In 55 a 260 V8 and in 56 a 270 was available. Don't know how much trouble you would encounter installing one in a 53 but I do know that the front motor mounts were very similar to the flathead 6's. Maybe someone here has done this with one of these poly V8's.

Here's a 260 poly in my early 56 1 ton. It aint pretty but it sure runs good. They went to the 270 later in 56.

The V8 option was a Dodge 2 bbl on a poly headed 270 cubed motor and they all had single exhaust.
The powerflite 2 spd automatic was another first for the 55 year.
As stated before, the De Soto engines of the same era had a bigger bang ( power to size ratio, but then De
Soto made no American trucks or poly heads for their motors. )
See if this will fit.
Width .... (oil filter installed) 31 1/8 ( remotes are now made for a inner fender spin on filter mount)
Height.... ( bottom of the pan to the top of the air cleaner ) 35 1/8
Lenght.... ( back of flywheel housing to the front of the fan ) 28 3/4

Paul, Check the link to see how well a '65 Poly 318 fit into my 52 B3FA. There are some clearance issues with the starter/steering gearbox/driver side exhaust manifold. I did have to re-do the firewall but I saved the part I cut out to go back to original later if I change my mind. The stock manifolds on this engine are center dump which would put it right into the top of the steering gearbox. The dimensions for this engine should be close to what Rodger posted and there's still plenty of room under the hood. I have more pics if you're interested. Hope this helps with making your decision. I really appreciate the great information. What is meant by a poly head? I notice the Pilot-house truck is 19481953. What changed in 1954 on? The red/white truck had a wrap around windshield, when did that come in?

The Poly head engine had a Polyspherical head. It's sometimes refered to as a semi-hemi. 54 was the first year for a 1 piece windshield. It did not wrap around as much as the 54 and on trucks.
I Googled this. ############################################ The Functional Design Era In 1954, Dodge was forced to updated their trucks again because of stiff competition. functional design era trucks retained all advancements from the pilot-house trucks. However they also added advancements to the list, lower load height, lower hood height, lower running boards, and lower cab floor were just a few. the entire front sheet metal was new, but had the same resemblance. the grille resembled a pyramid shape with two grille large bars in it. This was also the first time a V-8 could be opted for in a Dodge Truck. The cab was also new for '54. The exterior was streamlined and smoothed, while the interior was designed for comfort, safety, and durability. Total amount of glass was increased from 1,773 square inches of glass to 2,115 square inches. this was achieved by making a curved windshield and enlarging the side windows. 1955 In '55 Dodge introduced wrap-around glass for the front and rear of the cabs on pickups. thanks to the V-8 the speedometer read all the way to 110 mph. the body remained the same as in 1954. For 195 a new pickup was introduced, the C-3-BL6. This truck was only available with a 6 cyl. engine. This truck was the lightest truck in the line-up. A new transmission was introduced for 3/4 and 1 ton trucks, called

the Power-Flite. 1956 In 1956 barely anything changed, but over the model year Dodge added mechanical advancements to make the truck a tougher competitor. Some of these advancements were a change to a 12 volt system, tubeless tires, and all models except for Power Wagons got ignition-switch starting.

My shop truck info and pics *PIC*

I've been working this truck awhile and just started to take pictures of it. Its a 1950 3/4 ton 116 wheel base with a five window cab. Its not going to be a stock/restored truck thats not my style. My plan is to make it a hot rod shop truck. I stared with the truck that I found on ebay for $110 so that should tell you what shape its in. I almost got rid of it but then I found out about a neat front end swap. So I picked up a book Tex Smiths how to build hot rod mopars. There is a chapter about this swap and what car you can get the stuff from so I was back on ebay. That week end I found 1989 5th ave.(m body) I got the car for $125. So far the sub frame,rear motor, trans and awhole lot of other stuff is makeing there way into this truck. The sub frame and the rear are in I think this droped the truck about 12inches. I plan on making this truck into a usable truck something that will pull my Scotty camper haul parts and take to shows. I hope to have it done this summer. The picture I have is pretty bad but it gives you a idea of what I'm doing. Later John

I'm not real sure what the final truck is going to look like.I think time is going to decide that for me. The door was a good find. It was here at one of the local yards. They have a couple of these trucks and sofar they have been very fair on prices. There is a second door but the botton is very rotted. The whole truck has in the yard and it was signage all over its too bad the door was the best part.

engine rebuild or replace

I have a 1948 B1D pickup I am rebuilding. The truck is pretty much original, with the original 230 engine that runs with good oil pressure but smokes alot above idle. This engine has been in there for 57 years without the optional oil filter, and from the outside looks pretty raggedy. I also have a 1950 model 230 engine that came out of a B1D that spent its life on a farm in North Dakota. It looks really clean and solid on the outside,has the oil filter, and judging from the other parts I got that truck didn't have very many miles on it. The guy I bought it from ran it and said it sounded pretty good and didn't smoke after it ran a little. I was thinking I might just clean out the oilpan, clean it up and put it in. My friend suggested that with all the other work I am doing (sandblasting the frame, etc.) I should rebuild the engine. I am trying to follow a reasonable budget and I want this to be a driver. What would y'all do?

Hello Chris, I've resurrected four "barn-fresh" Dodge Pilothouse trucks that sat many years hefore they found me. They're incredibly easy to get running, and every one of them idled nicely and sounded good . . . . . that is, (gulp) until they got up to operating temp and were put on a long, hard pull. It is not until then that you can get a feeling for what you really have. How they look on the outside, how they idle, etc. is often little if no indicator of whatcha really have. Putting them on a long pull at operating temp. will never lie to you, and is the only acid test for an engine's condition I know of. Even compression tests are not too reliable, because old rings with no tension cn give fair readings but show up sorry on the test I suggest. Just my 0.02. Good luck, Dave Erb

Thanks Dave; When I bought the truck I replaced a rotten brake line, bled the brakes and got a pedal, and risking life and limb drove the truck 5 miles home. The old smoking 230 actually pulled me along ok even though stopping was not as reliable. Do you think it would negatively affect the value of the finished truck a lot if I wound up using the 1950 motor instead of the numbers matching original? Thanks again, Chris

The true mechanic will do a dry compression test and then a wet test.
If this is just the motor part of the truck, think how the rest of the truck may be worn out and is waiting for new
parts.
At Walmart one can find band-aides.
NAPA does have a master cyl for the brakes and shoes too.

Smokes a little when first started... I'll clean the pan.
The reason it smokes is not from a dirty pan. Do as your friend says and repair it correctly.

Actually the engine that is in the truck smokes, and I was talking about using the other engine. Thanks to the info I was given about the engine numbers I now know that the engine I bought is actually older than the one that came with the truck, so I won't feel bad about changing engines. I am going to have that engine rebuilt before I use it.

Mine is like Bills and Daves. The brake pedal is so high that it's a bit of an effort to get my foot on the pedal. Maybe some of that difference in the pedal heights can be adjusted out. I'll have to check it out.

If your brakes are ok, it should be adjusted to the point that it yields 3/4 to 1 1/2 inch free play. There should be an return spring on the clutch pedal also. On the cars it goes to t metal bracket bolted to the bottom of the bell housing, not sur where the truck spring is but there should be one. If yours if AWOL you can easily replace it from the selection from the hardware store.

Sounds to me like a lot of these units have a brake pedal that is taller than the clutch. How about this, you guys who have done frame-up restorations, is there a snubber missing on our brake pedal linkage, or are the two pedals really unequal height when all is kosher? This one shouldn't be rocket science to find an answer to. Dave Erb

Thanks for all the questions about parts, as I said in the first E-mail I will be pulling what parts I can and bringing them back. My main question is still if there is any interest in the tranny or not.
I think this truck may be rusty do to the rust that can be seen in the running boards, and the patch panels in the fenders. Because of the rust I do not think it is a good project truck.

I doubt I will go through the effort to pull the tranny unless someone tells me it is a popular and worthwhile item, as pulling a tranny on my back in the snow in January is no fun.

As Mueller writes, "Three years later Dodge upped the ante again, this time with its Truck-O-Matic option. Truck-O-Matic combined that fluid coupling with Chrysler's M6 semi-automatic transmission. Although a clutch was still included in the deal, it was needed even less - basically only for initial launches. The two-speed M6 transmission automatically shifted up at certain speeds. Although the equipment worked nicely, its $110 asking price limited demand for its installation. Truck-O-Matic Dodge pickups were quite rare, and the option was superseded by Dodge's first true automatic transmission in 1955."

As you can see the front fenders and doors are heavily rusted.
The running boards are full of holes, and the front end is dented.
I am not sure if any of the sheetmetal in front of the bed is worth taking.

I know it is not a Dodge but I thought I would show you anyway.
It`s a 56-57 (not a 52) International AS-110, 1320lbs load capacity. There was also a AS-112 made with
1650lbs load capacity.
These are very rare, a lot less of these were made than the Dodge coupe utes.

I have a 49 Dodge Route Van for sale, mounted on an 84 Dodge 1 ton dually chassis. The truck was from Arizona, zero rust or rot, all body work done on body shell, doors need priming. Includes a low miles 73 440/727 drive train that ran when removed from a motorhome. Two dana 70 rears, one narrowed and completely rebuilt, one stock width for parts or different wheel setup. Many spares, hard work is done, needs total finish and assembly. It's a big bastard, stand up head room, great tow vehicle, work truck or camper. and current work load mean this one will never get done, so better to move it along to someone who will finish. $3200. Located near Orlando, FL. 52 and 53 truck parts

Number one son lives in Kalispell, MT. There he has two trucks he would like to part out - a 1952 1 1/2 ton long block 4-speed with 12 ft bed and hoist, standard cab, running but no brakes, and a 1953 2 ton, longer wheel base, 2-speed vac shift axle, 5 window cab, 5 speed, also running. Sheet metal is not perfect on either, but Montana stuff is much better than we enjoy back east, where I am. Wiper Arm question...

Guys,
I have a bunch of 48-58 press on wiper arms, and I am confused as to which style arm is for which style truck.
If someone could measure the length of a 48 to 50 press on wiper arm, and if possible take a picture so I can
see what they look like, that would be a huge help.
All the 51-53 trucks I have checked so far use the wiper arms with the built in nut to hold them on, has anyone seen anything different? Also, I have seen both press on and the held on by a nut style 48-50 electric wiper motors, does anyone know
if the held on by a nut style arm changes length between the 48-50 electric wipers and the 51-53 wipers?

The factory plate inside the left door should give factory weight and max. weight My '53' 1/2 ton says 3900.

mine is the 1 ton, hard to read looks like the first number is 4500lbs, the second number which must be the total hauling weight is 7500lbs.

In a 1953 Service Bulletin, the following gross vehicle weights (GVW) are listed:
B4B 108-116: 4900 lbs
B4C 116: 5800 lbs
B4D 116-126: 8000 lbs
Payload
B4B 108-116: 4900 - 1000 lbs = 3900 lbs
B4C 116: 5800 - 1500 lbs = 4300 lbs
B4D 116-126: 8000 - 2000 lbs = 6000 lbs
Not too accurate but errs on side of safety if you're working up a load for a trailer. Can always get a weight ticket on a public scale at a scrap yard, etc. - costs $5 around these parts.

Hi to all I hope you are all surviving the pre Christmas rush.
In the last couple of days I have been asked by a couple of people for some photo’s of some Australian trucks,
so I have loaded some pic`s up to imageshack. Follow the link below.
I managed to stuff up the order in loading them and did not put titles on them for the different year models, so I
hope it’s not to confusing. I shall try and sort that out latter.
Any problems let me know.

Steel is the best. They are also the highest priced.
If you get the budget Steel, you'll get the same part as Roberts. I've never had problems with any of them but there's a few tricks to installing them.

Trading cab styles

Is it feasible to put a cab/hood from a 1940 model dodge truck (WF-32) on to a 1950 B2b chassis and convert it to a flatbed?. I really like that old cab and hood design and have access to one. I think the older model cab is a few inches narrower than the pilothouse. I wonder how much trouble and work it may be to make this fit. Thanks, and Merry Christmas to all of you Pilothouse Freaks. tall 16-inch radial tires

I've read various threads - and asked a few questions myself - about appropriate narrow 16-inch rubber that's tall enough (30 inches or so) to give a longer effective gear ratio for the original 4:10 B1B Dodge rear.
FYI - just got back from the local tire store where they have 215x85R16 tires that look perfect to me for my needs - just a tad over 30 inches tall, narrow enough to fit 4.5 rims, and thin enough to look right and steer well. Bottom line is this size is very popular on late model GM dualie pickups - which means they should be easily found in any tire store that's on the ball. Dave Erb Hew Holland, PA

Good choice of sizing on the LT 215/85R16 radial for your original wheels. On our Goodyear service truck dually, which came with that size, we used the alternate size of 7.50R16 on the back for the same section (narrow) profile; the 7.50R16 has a taller profile, and could have a better weight rating available to carry equipment load. The LT215 probably has a better availability and price than the 7.50, but maybe you might want to check that as some comparative info/source of product.
Tread patterns are basically 2 styles.....drivers (rear) typically are a cross/rib style segmentation; steering are usually a rib style. These considerations are applied as to big rigs. On your B-series, a rib on all 4 (5) is all you needed for uniform size and rotation purposes.

I just bought a 1953 1/2 ton pickup that the seller claims has a Truck O Matic transmission.
I will be going to strip the truck later this month, or early next month, and I was wondering if the tranny had enough value or interest for me to pull and bring back? Also, would anyone be interested in the leftovers, bare cab, frame, running gear, maybe front sheetmetal. The
truck is located in southeastern SD, and it has to be moved by the 7th of January.
The picture above is one I took of the truck a couple years ago, but it still looks much the same.

Eric.....the front glass (both)windshields look good. If those can be removed and shipped w/o damage, I would be interested in them. My experience of shipping glass, during a part time stint working in a salvage yard, was good about shipping glass, if packaged good.
I would gladly fund the items for cost and shipping, if I had some info on what you would like.
Where are you located? I am in Longmont, Colorado just north of Denver.

I am located in Madison WI.
I already bought the truck, so I would not need any money up front, if the windshields look good I will pull them,
though I think having glass made by a local shop might be better in the long run.

Probably right on the new glass concept. Just a fleeting thought, an excuse to beat the keyboard to a new acquaintance, filling idle time on a cold day, seemed like a worth while offer for you to recoup some of the purchase price.
What is a "truck-O-matic"? My guess is that it is a reference to a fluid clutch with a 3 or 4 speed behind it. From my youth growing days (54-58, high school) these vehicles only had a 3 or 4 speed trans option, with the availability of a regular dry clutch or the fluid drive mated to those transmissions.
Any internal cab items you find worthy of new use, contact me. I might be able to use something like that.

Eric I need the extensions that run from the radiator support out the the fenders. Let me know how much to compensate. Also would like the grill bars if in reasonably decent shape.

What engine is in this truck? There is a fellow on the P12 D 24 board is looking for an automatic to put behind a flathead 6. I remember in the early 60's there was a loadflite tranny in light trucks. This was a version of the powerfite/torqueflite that was modified for truck use by way of different valving and maybe a couple of HD internals. I think if this is a actual automatic not a version of the M6, he would be very interested.

I plan to take anything small or interesting to me off this truck, grill bars, bumpers, gauges, etc, etc.
I plan to leave behind the cab, doors if rusty, and front fenders if they are not super nice.
Also any drivetrain, frame, etc.
I will be driving a minivan to save on gas, so unless I can get it inside or on the roof it will be staying behind.
The reason I posted was to find out if anyone wanted the tranny, as I think I could bring that back, or if anyone
was near by and wanted the leftovers, otherwise when I leave I will have the rest scrapped.

Eric, I would be interested in buying some of the small stuff such as visors (both) if in good/decent shape, gauges, defrost, and choke knobs, and any grill guards if you are not needing them. Thanks

The Truck-O-Matic was based on the M6 transmission, not the Fluid Drive offered on earlier Pilothouse models. 53 was the first year offered and the Powerflight automatics debuted in 55. Probably makes TOMs pretty scarce.

I kind of hate to see that rare model parted out. Looks as if it could be restored. I have never seen a Truck-O-Matic.

I'm with ya Keith. From the photos I saw, that truck looks like it's mostly there and still a viable truck. Eric...how much would it take to just ship ,or deliver,the WHOLE unit to my garage here in Grass Valley?
